About the Madrid Internships Summer Program

The College at Brockport Madrid Internship sites are all located in Central Madrid or its immediate surrounding suburbs. Whether you are placed in a central Madrid location or in a nearby location, you will have the opportunity to learn how the Spanish people live and work. Every location has its own opportunities to try new things and meet new people. Madrid internship placements vary widely and most majors can be accommodated.

The College at Brockport works with the largest independent internship provider in Europe, EUSA, which places over 1,800 young people each year in a wide-range of professional practice situations in a variety of industry sectors. Placements are arranged by an experienced team working with each student on an individual basis. The placement team makes a considerable effort to match each student to an appropriate placement and to monitor the students throughout the semester.

Madrid is the city to live in if you are looking to have a dynamic, professional, and cosmopolitan living experience, as well as begin to understand the origins of Latino culture. You’ve seen images of Spain: the running of the bulls in Pamplona that Hemingway described, a bull fight at Las Ventas in Madrid, a terraza with people sipping sangría and enjoying the late afternoon sunlight, or any number of images of its fabulous beaches. In Madrid you also have the Prado Musuem and the Reina Sofia, where you will see Velazquez’s Las Meninas in person or Picasso’s greatest work, Guernica. In Madrid you’ll become a madrileño taking the Metro to work, and sitting at the cafés in La Latina, and joining everyone when you go de marcha at night and become involved in Madrid’s famous night life. As Madrid attracts people from across Spain, Europe, and the world, there are a lot of adopted madrileños or gatos (cats), as they are called in Madrid, so you’ll be in good company as you explore your new surroundings.

The Madrid Internships Program offers you the opportunity to:

  • Live and study in one of the world's most rewarding and historic environments,
  • Receive work experience in a company, organization, or agency affiliated with your area of study and interests,
  • Improve your Spanish language by communicating daily,
  • Enhance your writing and research skills,
  • Have total integration with other Spanish counterparts.

Your experience on the Madrid Internships Program will:

  • Integrate you into Spanish society,
  • Make you a better student and worker,
  • Expand your outlook on the world,
  • Build your self-esteem and self-confidence,
  • Greatly enhance your career prospects.

On the Madrid Internships Program, you will:

  • Live in the city of Madrid with other students from the Madrid Internship Program,
  • Receive a comprehensive on-site orientation that will maximize the benefits of your internship.

Housing

Students will reside in hotel accommodations for three nights for the orientation and on-site interviews at the beginning of the program.

After, students will live with a Spanish family. Homestays are carefully screened – all EUSA accommodation is safe, clean, and centrally located or easily accessible by public transportation.

When living with a Spanish family, you will have your own bedroom and are provided with breakfast and dinner seven days a week. Even though living with a family brings some limitations, many students report their homestay as a highlight of their time in Madrid – you will be working and living in truly Spanish surroundings with very limited temptations for speaking English!

Orientation

Prior to the start of the internship placement, each intern will participate in a pre-session orientation program organized by the program's Resident Director.

Course

Credits:

Participants in the Summer Madrid Internship program will earn approximately 9 credits.

Students are required to have an upper-intermediate level of Spanish language for this program. Typically, this is equivalent to five college-level Spanish courses. Students need to be able to demonstrate key competencies (listening, reading, writing and speaking) at this level.

Curriculum:

Interns will spend 9.5 weeks in Madrid (2-weeks of a Spanish language course and 7-weeks of an internship from Monday- Thursday). Participants in the program will be placed in businesses or non-profit organizations where they will be integrated into the workforce and perform tasks and projects assigned by supervisors and managers. A typical day is 9-6, with a break at 11 for a second breakfast and lunch at 2 pm, or even 3! If you have a customer-oriented internship, you will have commercial working hours: from 10 to 2 and from 5 to 8. Interns will also be required to follow the academic syllabus established for the course which will involve maintaining an attendance/activities log, submitting 1-2 page weekly journals on established topics and completing two, 5-page papers. These assignments will be submitted by email to the Instructor at Brockport.

Internship Placement

Students will have a phone or Skype interview with a member of the Placement Team at EUSA to speak about your goals, expectations, preferences, priorities, experience, language skills (where relevant), and any credit requirements. This information is used to find the most suitable placement for you. Students should expect their placement meeting to be conducted in Spanish.

Madrid is one of the most traditional yet modern cities in Europe with nearly 28% of the population coming from abroad. You could find yourself working alongside Spaniards, as well as people from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Madrid is the center of business and government, the entire country revolves around what happens in this city - placements have varied from fields in business to film production to veterinary science.

Business Etiquette/ Cultural Tips:

You may find your colleagues more interested in your personal life than you’d expect. It is very common for people to ask each other what they did on the weekend, and to want to know what is happening with one another’s family and friends. People are more direct in their comments regarding physical appearance - it is not uncommon for people to get complimented when they look nice, and criticized when they don't: what can be seen can be spoken about! Lastly, Spaniards are sociable people, they will want to include interns in what they do – we encourage you to take advantage of invitations and learn about their culture.
