Munich University of Applied Sciences: Summer Schools for Engineering and Supply Chain Management
The University of Applied Sciences – München was founded in 1971 by the amalgamation of seven colleges of technology and higher education, some of which date back to the early 19th century. Today it is the largest university of its kind in Bavaria and one of the largest in Germany. Its great variety of well-structured study programs, the instruction in small groups, its internationality and excellent contacts with industry and commerce make MUAS a highly renowned university.
Munich is one of the leading economic, technological and scientific hubs in Germany. Many world-renowned companies from a wide range of industrial sectors are based there, including BMW, Siemens, MAN and Linde.
Munich University of Applied Sciences is proud to offer two Summer Schools for Summer 2020:
1) Engineering for Sustainability
*The program is intended for advanced undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering.
2) The Journey to Industry 4.0 - From Operational Excellence to Advanced Manufacturing and Smart Supply Chains
*Students should have an understanding of the basic concepts of Operations and Supply Chain Management and Operational Excellence.

Housing & Orientation
Engineering program- Students have the choice to organize housing individually or to be accommodated by MUAS in a youth hostel in the Munich area (Meininger Hostel). The hostel is situated in a safe neighborhood with all amenities easily to reach.
Supply Chain program- Participants have the choice to organize housing individually or to be accommodated by MUAS in a hotel or a hostel in the Munich area, from July 12th to July 20th 2020 as well as on July 24th 2020. During the bus tour participants will be accommodated in hotels along the way.

The actual amount that you will spend depends heavily on your style of living, and will vary with each individual's personal spending habits, entertainment preferences and travel choices.
Note: We strongly recommend that you purchase trip insurance to cover loss of luggage, cancelled/missed flights, missed/cancelled program, etc. In the event that you cannot attend a program (for example, with a medical emergency or U.S. State Department Travel Warning), such insurance can cover loss of program fees resulting from a cancelled program.
Financial aid applies towards fees.
*The SUNY International Health Insurance is mandatory and will be included on the student's Brockport invoice.
**Varies depending on the SUNY campus at which the participant pays tuition.
The cost (and items included in the cost) as listed on the website are subject to change and should be considered estimates. Final budget sheets will be mailed to the student prior to departure and usually upon acceptance.
Engineering Program: Engineering for Sustainability
This is a 5 week summer school, students will earn 10 credits. The program is intended for advanced undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering. Students participate in an intensive German Language and Culture course in Week 1 and continue these studies part-time throughout the program (this is a 4 credit class). Students select two additional subject courses, which are taught in English by multi-national teams of two renowned lecturers from Munich University of Applied Sciences, California Polytechnic State University (USA) and the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (Munich). Each subject course is worth 3 US credits.
A broad and attractive cultural program makes your stay an unforgettable experience. The cultural program includes the following field trips:
- a guided tour of Munich and a visit to a typical beer garden
- field trips to the BMW World including a plant tour
- a day trip to the beautiful Herrenchiemsee New Palace on an island in Lake Chiemsee with a boat trip and a Bavarian lunch
- trips to the Munich Documentatin Centre for the History of National Socialism, to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site and to the Representation of the European Commission in Munich (as a part of the German Language and Culture class)
Meeting German students in class and afterwards provides unique insights into German every-day life. Joint studies with participants from all over the world complete an intercultural experience. The program will be complemented by receptions and get-togethers.
Students select one course for Weeks 2 and 3: Smart Environments, Engineering of Sustainable Energy Systems, and Crashes and Impacts: Analysis, Techniques & Biomechanics. See website and flyer below for more information.
Students select one course for Weeks 4 and 5: Smart Vehicles, Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems, and Sustainable Entrepreneurship. The Potential of Renewable Energy will be offered if there are enough participants. See website and flyer below for more information.

Supply Chain Program: The Journey to Industry 4.0 – From Operational Excellence to Advanced Manufacturing and Smart Supply Chains
This is a 2 week summer school, students will earn 3 credits. The summer school is designed for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students should have an understanding of the basic concepts of Operations and Supply Chain Management and Operational Excellence. A list of pre-readings will be provided for those students who feel a need to recap on these concepts. Equally important, students should be interested in and have a sufficient business strategy background for exploring the main future challenges, be it macroeconomic, socio-cultural or technological and elaborate the required concepts of operational excellence based on team work and interviews.
The participants of this summer school will get an insight into several companies and learn about their successful methods first hand. In the first week of the summer school, companies located in the Munich area will be visited. In the second week, a 4-day tour will take students to 4 different "champions" (leading companies in their business sector) in 4 different parts of southern Germany. During the company visits, the participants will have the opportunity to see selected levers for Operational Excellence at work, and will discuss company-specific topics with the managers in charge.
Munich locations may include:
BMW, MAN Truck and Bus, MTU Aero Engines, Audi or similar
Tour locations may include:
Siemens, KUKA, ASM, Airbus Helicopters or similar
Students will take three different "courses/tracks" worth 1 US credit, for a total of 3 US credits during the program: Future Supply Chain Management, Digital Operational Excellence, and Industry 4.0. Please see the links below for additional information on each course.
