Scholarships and Financial Aid

SUNY Brockport is excited to offer an array of study abroad scholarships and grants to both Brockport and non-Brockport students. Scholarship requirements and term distribution may vary. All awards will be put towards non-tuition expenses.

This award was established to support Brockport students in studying abroad on exchange for the fall semester. Students who participate on certain exchange programs are eligible to receive $500 towards their airfare when booking with a certain travel agency. This award is not offered each term.

Awards are available to students who are accepted and participate on any of the following exchange programs for the Fall 2020 semester:

  • Denmark: Aarhus University
  • England: De Montfort University
  • England: University of Portsmouth
  • Germany: DHBW Heidenheim
  • Japan: Toyo University

American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships & Grants: The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships and grants to individuals to pursue research, study or creative arts projects in one of the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

Benjamin A. Gilman International: This scholarship provides awards for US undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

David L. Boren Scholarships: Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for US undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. We focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to US national security, broadly defined, and underrepresented in study abroad.

Diversity Abroad Consortium Summer Scholarship​: The Diversity Abroad Consortium will offer summer scholarships  for full-time undergraduate (both community college and university level) students attending a member institution.

Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Scholarship: The Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Scholarship was formerly known as the Diversity Abroad/AIFS Blogging Scholarship. Diversity Abroad, in cooperation with the AIFS Foundation, will offer scholarships for fall and spring semester. Five scholarships are available for each semester. Economically disadvantaged students, first-generation, students with disabilities and ethnic and racially diverse students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Freeman – ASIA Program: Freeman Awards for Study in Asia provides scholarships for US undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship: The Gilman International Scholarship, a program of the US Department of State, is pleased to announce the inaugural round of the Gilman-McCain Scholarship for children of active military personnel. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

Inclusive Ireland Scholarship: Diversity Abroad is proud to partner with Education in Ireland to announce the creation of the Inclusive Ireland Scholarship Program. Ireland is committed to providing academically rigorous and culturally immersive study abroad experiences for students from all backgrounds and identities.

Institute for International Education: This is a database of listings for study abroad funding. Students may search for opportunities by host country region, subject of student, etc. All SUNY students from all campuses are eligible to apply to IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants

Live, Intern, and Learn Abroad Scholarship: Every year, EUSA awards $5,000 in scholarship funding to students participating in their Spring, Summer, and Fall term internship programs. SUNY Brockport currently offers internship programs through EUSA in Dublin, Ireland and Prague, Czech Republic. Students are selected based on their participation in a program, status as a first-time study abroad participant, a demonstrated financial need or part of a group underrepresented in study abroad, and a willingness to share their experience on social media. 

Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Grant​: Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Seventy-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year.

Fundraising will help to make your trip more affordable.

Make donating as easy as possible (cash or check) or set up a personal fundraising website like GoFundMe or Fund My Travel. You will be more likely to get an actual donation rather than a promise to donate, and don’t be afraid to follow up if you haven’t received a response. Enthusiasm, creativity, and perseverance on your part - and not fearing rejection in some instances - will likely take you a long way. Remember, every little bit helps!

Financial aid is available for study abroad participants on a Brockport program.

Brockport study abroad programs vary in price. Please refer to the budget sheet for the program you are interested in. You can find the budget sheet, outlining the cost of the program and the estimate of additional costs associated with participation in the program, on this website under the cost section of the program you are interested in. The budget sheets are meant to be used as guidelines, since the costs outlined in the estimate of additional costs are only estimates and may increase or decrease due to exchange rate fluctuations and personal spending habits.

If you currently receive financial aid in the form of a grant, student loan, or scholarship, you may be able to continue to receive that same financial aid to apply towards the cost of your participation on a Brockport Study Abroad Program. If you are eligible for any of the following types of aid, you may be able to use them to help offset the cost of studying abroad.
  1. Federal Aid (financial need based): Pell Grant, Perkins Loan, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Program Grant (SEOG), Educational Opportunity Program (EOP),and Subsidized Direct Student Loan.
  2. Federal Aid (non-financial need based): Unsubsidized Direct Student Loan or Direct Parent Loan (PLUS)
  3. State Aid (income based) : Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
  4. Private Scholarships 
  5. Alternative Student Loans - Apply with lender of your choice and will need to be certified by your home school.
Students apply for financial aid at their HOME CAMPUS. The home campus is the school where the student is earning their degree or matriculated at.

Enrollment in a program of Study Abroad Program approved for credit by the student's home institution, may be considered enrollment in the home institution for the purposes of applying for federal student aid.

Students from Other SUNY schools should contact the Financial Aid Office at their home campus to let them know they will be studying abroad through Brockport.  Please have your Financial Aid Office complete the Financial Arrangement Form, which is also available on this website under "Learning Content."

Non-SUNY students and SUNY Community College students must get the approval from their home campus.  You should ask to be advised about policies regarding visiting student status. In most cases, you will need to have a consortium agreement completed.  You will obtain the consortium agreement from your home school.  This agreement will then be sent to the Study Abroad Office at Brockport and it will be completed by the Financial Aid Office at Brockport and returned to your home institution for final approval.

Brockport students who are receiving financial aid, are recommended to request direct deposit of your funds. This will ensure that you will receive the money as quickly as possible.

If awarded the Excelsior scholarship, tuition is reduced, and the program differential will be increased accordingly. The total cost of the program remains the same.
